Why were people so barbaric in midieval times?

Many of these people had spent centuries attacking other peoples and lands. Until the barbarians settled in one area they were apt to continue to raid occupied lands to get enough to survive. Many of these raiders used their conquered opponents as slaves for the hard work they had to do when they were not raiding areas and peoples.
