Any feedback on septic tank / well water / sump pump in Oakland or Lapeer County, MI?

Hi, My fiance and I are looking to buy a home in either Brandon Twp or Clarkston, MI. All of the houses we are looking at have well water and a septic tank. We have never lived with either of these items before. My question is, does anyone live around these areas who can provide me feedback? Does the septic tank ever back up? How often does it have to be pumped? How is the well water? Do you have to have a water softener with salt? Is it worth it? My dad has advised me to stay away from homes with this type of system, but all of the houses we like seem to have this. Any help? Thanks!!!
