Unable to detect some wireless network?

If you're barely able to detect the hotspot with the Intel adapter, it's probably too weak to detect with the Edimax adapter. At the very least you're going to need an adapter that can take an external antenna, and you're going to have to use an antenna with some gain - something like a Cantenna (which you can build easily - there are plans all over the internet)..
