Does anyone know wasp/bees well?

For about a month now we have had a wasp/bee like insect in our back yard. We have tried to figure out what kind of bug it is but no success. The front half of the bug looks like a red wasp and the back half looks like an American bumble bee. It is about 2 inches long, burrows in the ground and there is only 1. Anyone have any clue??
