Christians... Does it really make sense to torture and sacrifice a man?

To clear you of your debt of sin? A lot of ancient civilizations used human sacrifice as sin atonement. What part of this bronze age ritual doesn't seem horrific to you? If god wanted to bring his message to people, why would he do it like this? Seems old school and barbaric to me.
