Can attraction overcome appearance?

I met this guy at uni a few weeks ago. He's really nice, and chatty and seems to hold all the qualities I would look for in a friend. Problem is, I think he likes me as MORE then a friend, if you know what i mean. I'd love to return the interest, but i'm not really attracted to him physically. He has a couple of good features, but let's just say he's no Brad Pitt. As I get to know him better, is it possible that he would appear more attractive to me? Sorry if this question seems really shallow, i'd just like a few opinions.
